The Hands on history team members are skilled crafters. We offer courses and workshops in several crafting techniques such as Textilework, Plant Dyeing, Woodwork, Bone and Hornwork and Leatherwork. For more information about courses and prices please contact ingrid@handsonhistory.no

Historical garments

We offer courses in "how to make historical garments". In this course we will carefully take you through the many steps of making your own historical garments. The course includes an introduction to research, instructions on how to treat, measure and cut fabric and finally how to stitch the garment.

Plant Dyeing

We offer courses in "how to Plant Dye Fabric". This is a step-by-step course in natural dyeing with plants and roots. The course includes an introduction to raw materials and historical sources. As we go, we offer sewing advice. We will provide the dyes for the course. We can also provide the fabric if needed. Do you want to learn how to make those bright, vibrant colors?

Woodwork

We also offer courses in Woodwork. This course covers how to make different kinds of every day live historical objects such as a bowl, a spoon or a trough. The course includes an introduction to raw materials and historical sources. We will also teach you how to take care of your wooden objects once they are done and in use. We will provide the tools needed for the course.

Bone and hornwork

Bone and horn are fantastic materials! We can teach you how to mend them in to beautiful knife shafts, cloak needles, spoons and buckles. The course includes an introduction to raw materials and historical sources. We normally work in deer or moose antler and bone and can provide the raw materials as well as the tools needed.

Leatherwork

Do you want authentic leather shoes, a bag, belt or a pouch? We also give courses in Leatherwork on a basic or advanced level. We will equipped you with the skill and know how to advance further on your own and to teach others. The course includes an introduction to raw materials and historical sources. We can provide the raw materials as well as the tools needed.
